PERSONAL TESTIMONY OF CHAN KOK KEONG

Many have tried to share the gospel to me but with little success as I found it difficult to accept Christ as the only way to reach god as other religions also have good intentions and teachings that are similar to the bible.
I perceive christianity as too troublesome & rigid like having to attend church every Sunday, leading a regimented life of bible study, prayers and so on. Furthermore christians are always being judged differently because they are expected to live a holy life and when a christian commits sin, they will judged very harshly.

I accepted Christ and went for my water baptism on 14th November 1998. Before knowing Christ, I was just a free thinker who believes there’s just a god up in heaven and that all religions will lead us to the same god. Just like my other non-Christian friends, I believe that if we do good deeds and do not harm people, god will bless us. As a chinese & coming from a buddhist background, I never really practice their ways of worshipping nor took it’s beliefs seriously. Only when I am in trouble, I will go to the temple to pray or consult a fortune- teller for advice.

To compound matters is the double life led by some of my Christian colleagues. They preached one thing but in reality they do things contrary to what they preached. Their attitude really puts me off and created a negative impression in my mind about their religion.

I met my wife in December 1996 and it was her who led me to Christ. Initially, it was tough on her as I was very resentful towards her sharing but her persistence and patience saw me through. The bible she gave me as a birthday gift convinced me to accept Christ. By reading the bible I was able to understand how god’s love and miracles has impact the life of others and the reason Jesus came in to the world to die for us. I also realize that when you accept him as your savior, you will have a personal relationship with him. Jesus is the best and closest friend you can ever have, accessible always. You can just converse with him anywhere and at any time. You don’t have to bow before any altar, visit any temple nor perform any rituals to reach god.

It’s been more than 4 years since I have accepted Christ and there was never a moment of regret. They only regret was I did not accept him sooner. I do have my ups and downs even after accepting Christ but the difference now is I have someone to cling on, to confide in and someone to pull me out of the pits. Many times in the past, I have tried to resolve problems with my own strength and understanding but without much success. Today my problems seem so small with Jesus. Nothing really matters accept to continue to have a passion and desire to seek god’s heart and develop a closer walk with Jesus and when you continue to have the hunger & passion to seek him and do his work, his glory will be revealed in your life. And when you experience the glory of god in your life, you will know that you have treaded on the right path and you will say “Thank you Jesus for your love” everyday. Amen.
